๐Ÿพ Why Your Dog Ignores "Come" (And What to Do About It)

The Weekly High Five ๐Ÿพ

One Quick Win ๐Ÿ™ One Video to Watch ๐Ÿ‘€ One Post I Loved

Hey Reader,
โ€‹
You call your dog. They look at you. Then they go right back to what they were doing.

Frustrating, right?

Here's the thing: recall isn't just about saying "come" louder or more times. There are actually five specific rules that determine whether your dog comes when called, and most people break at least three of them without realizing it.
โ€‹
With the warmer weather for us cold States right around the corner. Recall is going to be a big deal very soon.

This week I'm revealing the five rules of recall that change everything, sharing a quick win you can implement today, and showing you how to teach your dog the hardest skill of all: being calm.

โ€‹
One Quick Win ๐Ÿ™

This week's Quick Win focuses on "Match Your Rewards to the Environment":

  1. Identify three different environments: inside your house, your yard, and out in public with distractions.
  2. Create a reward hierarchy: low value (dry kibble), medium value (regular training treats), high value (cheese, chicken, hot dogs).
  3. Use low value rewards for easy recalls inside where there's minimal distraction.
  4. Use medium value rewards in your yard where there's more interesting stuff happening.
  5. Save high value rewards exclusively for recalls in public with real distractions like other dogs, people, or exciting smells.

Your dog isn't going to ignore a squirrel for the same boring kibble they get every day.
โ€‹
But cheese? Hot dogs? That might actually compete with the squirrel.
โ€‹
Stop expecting your dog to work for minimum wage when the environment is offering them way more interesting options.

One Video To Watch ๐Ÿ‘€

Why doesn't your dog come when called? In this week's essential video, I reveal the five rules of recall that most people break without even knowing it!

Learn why you should never call your dog for anything unpleasant (and what to do instead), discover why repeating "come come come" actually makes things worse, and find out how to make recalls so rewarding your dog can't resist.
โ€‹
These aren't just tips. They're fundamental rules that determine whether your recall training actually works.

One Social Post I Loved ๐Ÿงก

Think your dog should just naturally know how to be calm? This week's post reveals that calmness is actually one of the HARDEST things for dogs to learn and must be taught like any other command!

โ€‹Check out this post from @thegooddogyorktown about teching calmness.โ€‹

This is perfect for dogs who can't settle when guests are over or when you're trying to work from home.

Here's What Most People Don't Understand About Recall
โ€‹

That reward matching tip I just gave you? That'll help immediately. And the five rules in the video will change how you think about recall training.
โ€‹

But here's the reality: recall is one of the most complex behaviors to train because it requires your dog to ignore everything interesting in their environment and choose you instead. That's a big ask.
โ€‹

Most people try to piece together recall training from random YouTube videos and Instagram tips. They get some results, then hit a wall. Maybe their dog comes inside but not outside. Maybe they come in the yard but not at the park. Maybe they come sometimes but not when it really matters.
โ€‹

That's because recall isn't one skill. It's a layered system that needs to be built methodically, step by step, in the right order.
โ€‹

That's exactly why I created the 30 Day Recall Course. It's not a collection of tips. It's a complete system that takes you from "my dog ignores me" to "my dog comes every time I call" in 30 days.
โ€‹

We start with foundation work in your house, then gradually add distance, distractions, and duration in a way that sets your dog up to succeed at each step. No guessing. No piecing things together. Just a proven process that works.
โ€‹

If you're tired of your dog blowing you off when you call them, especially in situations where it actually matters, this course gives you the full roadmap.

The Weekly High Five ๐Ÿพ Hey Reader,I was on a coaching call last week with a family who had been going hard since the first warm day hit. Morning sessions. Second sessions after dinner. Extra training time on the weekend walks. They had actually increased their routine since spring started, because the chaos had increased. Their dog was getting worse. More pulling. More zoning out. More spinning at the door before walks. They couldn't understand it. They were doing more than ever. I asked one...

The Weekly High Five ๐Ÿพ Hey Reader,I got a text a last year around this time. It was one of those first real spring days, windows-down weather. A family I was working with had just gotten home from a walk with their dog. Three words: "He was wild." Pulling from the start. Spinning in circles. Barking at every dog they passed. They'd been looking forward to that walk all week. Figured he finally deserved the long outing he'd been missing all winter. By the time they got home, their pup couldn't...

The Weekly High Five ๐Ÿพ Hey Reader,Let's be real. Spring is here and you're about to spend a lot more time outside with your dog. Longer walks. Off-leash moments in the yard. Maybe a park visit. And right about now, a lot of families are realizing their recall isn't as solid as they thought. They call their dog. The dog hears them. And... does nothing. So they call again. "Come. Come. COME." And eventually, the dog wanders over. Here's the deal. This isn't a willingness problem. Your dog isn't...
